Samsung Galaxy Z Flips’ Price Drop and Future of Foldable Phones

Samsung recently dropped the price of Galaxy Z Flip 5G by $250. The mobile now costs $1,199.99 which is still expensive. It seems Samsung is trying to lure more users by the big discount but it doesn’t seem likely that its demand will increase. Consumers tempted by the offer must keep two things in mind. The phone is now six months old and has the same design as any other non-5G phones released last year. Samsung is known for manufacturing the best phones in the market, and even though Galaxy Z Flip 5G is a good phone but it does not justify its price.

The price drop has been a trend when it comes to folding phones. So, Samsung has not done anything unique. In fact, the price drop was expected from them since every other company was doing it. Now, the phones come with similar specs as the Galaxy S20 FE 5G, which can be bought for $700. So, it’s hard to hard understand why Galaxy Z Flip 5G costs $500 more. Even though it is a foldable flip phone, it still doesn’t make sense to ask such a high price.

Samsung’s President of Mobile recently promised that he would make foldable phones more accessible to everyone in 2021. When the latest earnings of the company were made public, it was officially announced that Samsung will be expanding its portfolio of foldable products in the coming years.

Samsung is expected to release a new version of the Z fold later this year. It is likely to come with stylus support but it’s uncertain when Samsung might release it. The price drop indicates that the phone might be released sooner than expected. However, the more relevant question about Flip-foldable phones is the uncertainty over price. Most flip-style folding phones that have been released so far have been overpriced. For example, Motorola Razr 5G was priced at $1,400 when it was released, and even though it was later discounted to $1,200 it was still expensive just like Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

Folding phones are sold as luxury products by every company so far. They cost twice as much as non-folding phones with the same specs. It is therefore crucial that Samsung keeps its promise of making foldable phones more accessible in the coming years. Otherwise, they would remain a luxury product and most consumers won’t consider buying them.

It would be interesting to see what 2021 means for foldable phones. We might see an unprecedented shift in the market. One question lingers in the minds of smartphone enthusiasts- Is the future foldable? As of now, it’s tough to answer that all we can say of certain is 2021 will be an important year.
