Avatar: Aang’s Unique Body and His Rare Achievements

Aang is one of the most loved protagonists and has remained quite popular even after a decade of Avatar’s release. Despite being the strongest character of the series there is no ego or overconfidence. He is very calm and disciplined in serious situations. When he is not fighting, he can be hilarious at times which makes him a great entertainer. Aang was frozen for more than 100 years but his age does not define him in any way. One could hardly believe that this person with a childlike face and demeanor is 112 years old.

His carefree and innocent attitude to life is an expression of his young biological age. Despite the odds, he became Avatar at a very crucial time and played his part exceptionally well. His achievements were a result of a never-die attitude and a unique body that could pull-off inexplicable feats. Today we look at some of these unique characteristics of Aang’s body to understand him better as a protagonist and a hero.

Influence of Eastern Tradition of Aang’s Body and Character Design

Aang’s character development was inspired by the philosophy of Taoism and Buddhism. It influenced not only his exterior appearance but also his internal anatomy. His outfit closely resembles those of monks from the east. Buddhist monks dress the same way and they always wear loose-fitting clothing. Taoist philosophy encourages a vegetarian diet and inspired by that Aang is also vegetarian. His beliefs and internal makeup show a clear influence of Eastern concepts of the idea of chi. The four forms of bending have roots in Eastern martial arts and even the animation is influenced by Japanese anime.

Spiritual Projection and the Spirit World

Aang has been projected as a spiritual person in the Avatar series. He can connect with the Spirit World and his past lives. The Avatar has been called the bridge between the mortal and spirit world several times throughout the series. Aang has proved that statement to be true by projecting himself into the spirit world on a number of occasions. He is able to do it, thanks to his spiritual projection. This airbending technique requires a high level of spirituality. Aang has this unique ability to separate himself from the rest of his body through deep meditations. In these states, he finds inner spiritual connections and enters the spirit world.

During the Siege of the North, Aang was able to achieve this state and successfully projected himself into the Spirit World. However, it is important to know the difference between spiritual projection and astral projection as they are not the same thing. While Astral projection is an enerybending technique the spiritual projection is a complicated airbending technique. Aang could connect to his past lives thanks to spiritual projection. He can also connect with spirits, for example when he was submerged in water, he joined with the Ocean Spirit to destroy Fire Nation’s fleet by acquiring strong waterbending.

Energybending

Energybending was a rare form of bending which predated the four common bending styles. It could be used to bend another person’s life energy. Aang was lucky that he was given this ability by the lion turtle and it became crucial for him when he fought Ozai. It was energybending that helped him deal with Fire Ozai’s bending prowess. His energybending improved significantly with time. He took away Yakone’s bloodbending with ease just like he did with Ozai. Thanks to energybending, Aang was much more threatening than he used to be.

While fighting Yakone there were several moments in which Aang was under pressure. But he luckily kept fighting thanks to energybending. With time energybending became a crucial power and Aang used it quite often. With increased efficiency, he was able to take away all of his enemy’s powers almost instantly. The opponents would have no way of attacking Aang and the fight would become one-sided in a few seconds. Energybending was therefore very influential and important for Aang, who used it in several important fights.

Youngest Bending Master

Aang was a very skilled bender from a very young age. He received his blue arrow tattoo at the age of 12 and went on to become the youngest airbending master. He then mastered all other bending arts in a short period and proved how talented and gifted he was.

Early Death

Since Aang was frozen for over 100 years, it harmed him greatly in the long-run. For the entire time he spent in the iceberg, he was in his Avatar state which drained a lot of life energy. Due to this, he died prematurely, while his predecessor lived very long lives, for example, Kyoshi died at the age of 230. Very few Avatar can claim that they did as much as Aang for the betterment of the world.

Aang had several other secrets and unique body characteristics than those mentioned above. He was a great hero who knew the importance of being humble and kind to others. Despite being the strongest man in his world, he never made anyone feel small in front of him. He is admired not just because of his incomparable abilities but also his kind and forgiving nature. It has been more than a decade since Avatar was broadcasted for the first time but even today, he is one of the most popular fictional characters.
