Tiger King and Parasite Are Most Searched TV Series And Film of 2020

Google recently shared the most searched TV series and movies in 2020; Netflix’s Tiger King and Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite are at the top of the list.

Joon-Ho’s black comedy thriller movie Parasite was one of the most critically acclaimed films. It took home many awards, including the Academy Award and Palme d’Or for the Best Picture. It also won the BAFTA Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Film Not in the English Language. Apart from that, Parasite also won Oscars for Best Director, Best International Feature Film, and Best Original Screenplay. The movie was released on 30 May 2019 in South Korea and became a sensation in 2020.

Another most-searched TV series was Tiger King. It is a true-crime documentary streaming TV miniseries based on the life of Joe Exotic, a zookeeper. The series received a positive response from critics and was watched by 34.3 million people within ten days of release. The series aired from 20 March to 12 April 2020. That was the time when the global pandemic hit, and the show became an overnight sensation.

Tiger King explores the interconnected society of big cats and the conservationist of America. The story revolves around the zoo owner in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. And Exotic’s rival Carole Baskin is the CEO of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. She is an animal rights activist who shifts the big cats to a sanctuary. Whereas Exotic thinks Baskin simply wants to eliminate the competition. The two exchange harassment campaigns, threatening videos, protests, and allegations that involve the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and PETA. Later Exotic goes much further and alleges that Baskin murdered her husband, Don Lewis.

Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin’s Tiger King holds an approval rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 75 reviews, with an average of 7.88/10 rating. On Metacritic, the film scored 75 out of 100. The critic of Variety magazine Caroline Framke called the show “messy yet compelling.” Tiger King got six Primetime Emmy Awards nomination for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series, Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score), Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming, and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program (Single or Multi-Camera).

Simultaneously, Joon-Ho’s Parasite collected a gross of $264.4 million against a budget of $11.4 million. With the amazing collection, it became the highest-grossing South Korean film. According to many critics, the film is one of the best movies in 2019.

The movie is a cinematic art exploring wealth disparity, class conflict, and social inequality. The film depicts the late-stage of capitalism, where the country suffers from unemployment due to high education and the crisis they have to face.

During Google’s annual Year in the Search listing, the team shared that viewers have searched for Parasite and Tiger King the most. The South-Korean movie Parasite beat 1917 in the search list, and Black Panther is in the third number. On the TV series list, Big Brother Brasil is in the second position, while Money Heist and Cobra Kai are in the third and fourth position.

The list revealed that Academy Awards contenders dominated the searched list of movies. Black Panther was on the list for two years, and the death of the popular actor Chadwick Boseman could be the reason for being third on the list. The film 365 Days is an interesting one, and it is on top of the list as it is one of the most explicit films. On the other hand, Contagion is on the list due to the similar contents to the coronavirus pandemic. Surprisingly, the top five movies in the searched list are not even released this year.

In contrast, Netflix dominates the TV series race. It took four places out of five. Robert Mark Kamen’s Cobra Kai was initially made as YouTube content, which was later bought by Netflix and became a popular show. It was based on The Karate Kid movie series stars Jacob Bertrand, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Courtney Henggeler, and Peyton List.

Big Brother Brasil was the odd one out, where the contestants were informed about the coronavirus after entering the house.

However, the year belonged to Tiger King and Parasite, and both dominated the search trends for 2020.
