Netflix’s Growing Anime Audience and It’s Future

Netflix has been working on increasing its anime content for the last few years, and it has finally started paying off. The anime audience of the streaming site has more than doubled this year, which is an impressive achievement. It seems that Netflix will soon be one of the top anime streaming sites. The Netflix 2020 Year in Review shared the news with the fans and declared that there is over 100% lift in anime viewing.

The fans have been divided over Netflix’s attempt to take over the anime industry. The company is ruthless in its approach to acquiring new series as soon as they believe it might be the next big hit. Although, most of the time addition of complete anime series to Netflix’s catalog is a welcome move, sometimes when they acquire the rights to shows streaming elsewhere, they end up making some of the fans angry. Most fans prefer to watch the shows as soon as they air in Japan, but Netflix has an entirely different strategy that goes against this preference.

Netflix’s release strategy is focused on waiting until the season finishes in Asia, and only after that, they release all the episodes at once. Fans who like to watch the episodes every week hate to wait. Moreover, it’s tough to avoid spoilers online when the release is delayed for so many months. However, there is one aspect in which Netflix has done better than some other anime streaming sites. Netflix’s anime originals are great and have been very successful overall. One of the most popular ones is Blood of Zeus that has impressed a lot of anime fans.

Devilman Crybaby and Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution was released worldwide and had enormous success. Netflix streamed a massive variety of well-known anime this year, including Beastars. Some experts believe that the increase in numbers is not surprising since all streaming services have seen an enormous increase in subscribers. So, the rise in anime viewers might have been influenced by the global healthcare crisis. But, irrespective of it, the anime content has been growing in the last few years, and it appears that trend will follow in the future as well.

Netflix has already announced a number of original series for next year. The most popular ones, The Way of the Househusband, High-Rise Invasion, etc. It appears Netflix is well on its way to dominating the anime industry in the future years. It won’t be easy, but if any company is capable of pulling it off, it is Netflix.
