A Newly Designed Robot Can Perform Human-Like Behaviors

In recent times, AI-Robotics researchers and engineers have made a lot of progress in designing robots that perform human-like activities. In the meantime, Disney’s research team is also making robots that can show agility and engage in a scary eye-contact.

The scientific research team of Disney, commonly called Disney Research, wrote a paper in which the team has described how an advanced robot (technically called Audio-Animatronic humanoid) can perform a realistic human-like gaze. Previous iterations of the technology were more focused on technical uses of the human-like interaction.

The authors of the paper, which Disney published, have written how their latest technological breakthrough creates a robot that can give a gaze that imitates human-human eye contact. The authors have written that they have used a character animation lens where the degree of exactness and realness is of the highest order.

Disney has been developing mechatronic puppets for quite a while now, along with realistic humanoids with unbelievable auditory and visual capabilities. The usefulness of this type of breakthrough can be seen in Disney theme parks present worldwide.

They have also released a video which can be viewed on Youtube. In the video, if you have seen it, you can see the newly created robot playing the character of an elderly man. The character has been written to describe him as an aged person lacking optimum hearing and eyesight abilities. However, the old man is aware of the people around him and is distracted whenever someone passes across him or greets him.

The old man glances at the people passing by and gives a rebuking look to anyone who tries to invade his personal space. However, he also acknowledges the close existence of someone he closely knows. Using reactive robotic architecture (also called subsumption architecture), the researchers tried to embed intimate movements like inhalation or exhalation and blinking. Behavioral response to external stimuli (a characteristic feature of a sentient being ) has also been noticed in the latest models.

The authors called their work more artistic than scientific and compared the science of animatronics to that of performers in a theater.

The calculated behaviors that the robots are based on are four response options as the standard reaction to someone who is standing closely. The four response options are read, engage, glance, and acknowledge.

The default state is read, and the robot will be appearing reading something if it’s doing nothing else. The glance state is activated when the robot’s line of sight is hampered by an object; then, a signal will be triggered to activate the read or engage state. The engaged state is activated when the robot does not recognize a person and engages in a curiosity stare towards him or her. The acknowledge state is activated when the robot recognizes a person.

In conclusion, this technological breakthrough will not only take the filmmaking game to the next level, but it will also help the scientific community in realizing their dream of fully functioning AI-powered humanoid, which will enable humanity to take leaps in technological advancement.
