How to use AirDrop to share something from iPhone to MacHow to use AirDrop to share something from iPhone to Mac

AirDrop is an excellent feature for Apple devices. This feature comes with iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS. AirDrop makes sharing content across Apple devices simple and straightforward. It offers the ultimate sharing experience to iPhone, Mac, and iPad users regardless of file type and size. You can share files across the devices without needing to cloud or an external drive. This post will help you learn how to transfer files between iPhone and Mac.

The basic requirements

  • Make sure that you have turned on Bluetooth on your iPhone and Mac.
  • Remember to keep both devices within range (30 feet).
  • Update the iPhone with iOS 7 or newer.
  • You have turned off the Personal Hotspot on your iPhone.
  • Mac 2012 or newer with MacOS 10/10/5 Yosemite or higher.

Allow AirDrop on MacOS

  • Access the Finder and choose AirDrop available on the left.
  • Hit the Allow option.
  • You will have a drop-down menu with two options: Contacts Only and Everyone. Choose the one.

Note: If you go through the Contacts Only option, you will need to sign in to iCloud on Mac and iPhone. Make sure that Mac should have an email address or mobile number. And also, the number and email ID should have linked with the sender’s iCloud account.

Normally, while transferring files from iPhone and Mac, you may not find a notification prompt to receive files. Though, if someone from your family or friend circle wants to share files through AirDrop, you will get a prompt for permission. The Everyone option shares the same settings.

You will also have to confirm that the Firewall should allow incoming connections. Let’s do it practically.

  •  Go to System Preferences.
  • Access Security & Privacy.
  • Choose the Firewall section.

If you find Firewall turned on here, you will have to use the next steps.

  • Now you have to locate and click on the Lock in the bottom left corner and provide the password to open the settings.
  • Go through the Firewall button.
  • Click to remove the checkmark next to the option called Block all incoming connections
  • Finally, hit on the OK button to finish the process.

Allow AirDrop in iOS 14

  • Go to Settings and then access the General tab.
  • Now click on AirDrop.
  • Choose any one of two: Contacts Only and Everyone.

Note: If you choose the Contacts Only option, ensure that the two devices are signed in to iCloud. The iPhone should have the details, including the email address or contact number linked with the iCloud account on the Contacts Only app.

While sharing files from an iPhone to Mac, no prompt will appear to receive incoming data. But when a family member or a friend wants to share, you will be notified to accept the transfer. You will see the same thing when you choose the Everyone option.
