Canceling the Sequel of Among Us Was the Right Choice for Innersloth

The recent growth in the populariry of the 2018 multiplayer murder mystery game has even taken its developers by surprise, who planned to work on its sequel, Among Us 2. They even admitted that they had never expected to see this game go viral and become so successful. In the wake of the sudden exponential growth in its popularity, Among Us developers recently have announced that they have canceled the sequel as they want to work on the original game. The game has more than 100 million downloads, and its player count rose to 3.5 million at the end of September 2020.

Players who were waiting for the game’s sequel need not be disappointed as developers have planned to incorporate the sequel updates in the original game itself. InnerSloth, the game studio behind Among Us, wants to give the players a faster update. Hence, instead of developing a whole new game from scratch, they have opted to update the original game, which sounds logical as the company is looking to capitalize on the recent popularity that it has gained.

The players in the game are divided into two groups – Crewmates and Imposters. The task of the Crewmates in the social deduction game is to identify and eliminate the Imposters. They also have specific tasks to complete, while Imposters have to kill the Crewmates without being identified. The space-themed game does a great job of stoking curiosity and engrossing the players. Although it might sound simplistic, you must brace yourself to be surprised by your enemies as the two groups struggle to complete their tasks and kill off each other. It needs around 4-10 players to play the game, who are then divided into two groups randomly. The number of Crewmates is always greater than Imposters in the beginning. The game involves a lot of trickery, lying, deception, and accusations, making it far more engaging than most games in its genre.

Canceling the Sequel of Among Us Was the Right Choice for Innersloth

Among Us was released in 2018, but two years ago, it hardly got any serious gamer’s attention. Therefore, the game struggled to rise in popularity even though it did have a significant number of active players both in Brazil and Korea, but that stands nowhere in comparison to the exponential growth in its users in the last few months. Its rise began when a well-known Twitch Streamer with almost 3 million subscribers started streaming it a few months back. After that, it grew exponentially in fame first in the US and then worldwide.

But, how should the company approach the recent unexpected success that they have got? The decision not to make a sequel and work on the original game seems like a masterstroke since there is a good possibility that the sequel might divide the audience. Moreover, once the developers have improved it, they can work on monetizing through in-app-purchases or other means, making it profitable for them. Irrespective of the path they choose, Among Us seems to have a bright future as they plan to improve the original game; canceling the sequel might have been a tough choice, but it was the right call since the company knows how much profitable they can be for them. If they had not canceled the sequel, they would have probably divided their audience and lost on a great opportunity to make money.
