Earth is Spinning with a Negative Leap Second

What if on 31st December 2021 at 11:59:59 PM, someone says that the very next second will not lead to 2022, and everyone has to wait for one more second. Yes, due to some mishaps, the time is one second behind from its natural work. Strange, isn’t it? Even at the same time, some may start cheering for 2022. But, with the latest information, something is happening at the planetary level that is affecting time. Due to some atmospheric pressure and rotation of Earth around its axis has opened much discourse for more time adjustments apart from leap years. In this article, we will explore more details about this latest development in the domain of science. It is essential to understand how Earth spins with a negative leap second. Hence, it means it is rotating a bit faster than its standard rate.

How did the news break out?

From 1960 till 2020, 28 instances are present when the planet Earth has been slower or faster to complete the revolutions around the Sun in its orbit. The current acceleration data has led scientists to think about Earth’s spin on its axis. The observation is clear that Earth spins with a negative leap second. Hence, a second gets subtracted with such results. On average, the length of a day in terms of seconds is 86400. However, it will now get adjusted by 50 microseconds. So, in 2021, an astronomical day will be 0.05 milliseconds shorter.

Factors that influence the time

The primary reason behind time adjustment is Earth rotation. But, the rotation of Earth depends on several factors, including:

  1. Ocean Currents
  2. Atmospheric Pressure
  3. Direction of the Wind
  4. Movement of the Core elements (NiFe – nickel, and iron)
  5. Tectonic movements (on a miniature scale)

What is a leap second?

An adjustment of one second to align with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is known as leap second. The adjustment occurs because of the difference in time. The calculation of the time difference is between the atomic clock and the observed solar clock. UTC is the most accepted time convention for it is using the ultra-accurate and precise atomic clocks. Hence, international timekeepers use UTC to set the time for civil applications. International Earth Rotation and Reference System Services meet twice a year to set the UTC adjustments in advance (June or December). Another adopted measure is that the time adjustment or difference between both the clocks must not go beyond 0.9 seconds at all.

How many times leap seconds are adjusted?

As per the information available from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, scientists usually add leap seconds in every one and a half years on an aggregate basis. The last time when the leap second got adjusted was in 2016. On the eve of New Year, an extra leap second got added. In general trend, an addition of a leap second happens during the deviation of UTC by more than 0.4 seconds. This deviation is due to the astronomical change in setting  the time to complete Earth’s one rotation.

Is this a rare case?

Yes, it is. Usually, there has been the addition of a leap second. But, it is the first instance when humanity has to shrink the time scale. Because of the results giving the inference that Earth spins with a negative leap second, there will be subtraction. According to Prof. Peter Whibberley of the National Physics Laboratory, this negative leap second has started a new debate.

Conclusion

It is quite unique for humanity when the clock adjustments will witness contraction for the first time. Earth spins with a negative leap second is in itself one of the intriguing scientific events in the course of scientific history. This negative leap second also raises many eyes that look upon the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning to understand the pattern and forecast such adjustments so that there cannot be any mishap. Also, the time has come to understand whether current anthropogenic factors influence the atmosphere’s chemical composition. These may, somewhere, also affect its pressure and, in turn, result in time adjustments. Hence, any human activity can also be a potential indicator to bring time adjustments due to positive or negative leap seconds.

How to Deter a Robber: Entertaining Comedy with Earnest Characters

Whatever the reason, you sometimes want to escape your own reality, and films and books can help you in doing that. “How to Deter a Robber” is one such film which can elevate your mood instantly; plucking all the negative energies from your surroundings.

Maria Bissell has come up with an interesting PG-13 comic home invasion film that can make anyone laugh, no matter how low they are feeling.

The plot of the film goes something like this- Madison Williams (played wonderfully by Vanessa Marano) had led a pretty comfortable life, and the only thing she has felt deeply sad about up until now is the death of her pet bird. She has a boyfriend named Jimmy (Benjamin Papac) and one day he joins her for dinner with her family. However, the conversation which started out as a light-hearted fun talk turns into an argument which upsets Madison because all of them start to make fun of the things she has done in the past.

Later on, she and Jimmy have a conversation in the garage where she notices her neighbours’ lights being turned on. She finds it strange because she knows for a fact that neighbours are away for vacation. Suspecting a paranormal presence, and being bored out of her mind, she formulates a plan and marches towards the house taking Jimmy with her.

Madison takes a Ouija board and organizes a ritual; however, things don’t go as planned, and they pass out drunk instead of investigating the house. They woke up only to find that the house had been burgled. They inform the police who tell them that there have been other cases of robberies in the town and they are currently investigating it.

The couple are then sent to Andy’s (Madison’s uncle) house, and this starts an epic tale as the couple decides to catch the robber and solve the case once and for all.

Maria Bissell has done a wonderful job in this feature film and has filled the films with a lot of witty one-liners which are so funny that you will get through the film even if you find the plot weak and cheesy.

In short, the movie revolves around a couple of teenagers who are posing as amateur detectives, and they somehow end up getting more than they bargained for. Things go south when they end up investigating the wrong cabin.
