How to Enable Dark Mode on Chromebook

In this article, we will discuss how to enable Dark Mode on Chromebook as they are getting more attention nowadays to add the new feature like read later, dark mode, phone hub, clipboard history, and more. Of all the above-listed features, we know that most of us were waiting for the system-wide dark mode. Well, it has finally arrived on Chrome OS, and you can bring it to the front through a Chrome flag. Yes, you will need a Chrome Flag to enable Dark Mode on Chromebook.

But before you access the dark mode flag, you need to be on the Beta channel of Chrome OS. This is because the Dark Mode is not yet available for use in the Stable build version of Chrome OS, which is why you will have to go for a bit buggy build version.

You may switch over to the beta channel by following these steps:

  1. Go to “Settings.”
  2. Then proceed to the “About Chrome OS” option.
  3. Further, click on the “Additional Details.”
  4. Then, click “Change Channel” and choose “Beta.”
  5. Re-open the “About Chrome OS” for checking the updates if there are any.

Enable Dark Mode on Chromebook with These Steps

Below we have mentioned the steps with the help of which you can enable the new dark theme on Chromebook:

  1. First, go to chrome://flags on the browser and search for “Dark.”

  3. Further, press the “Restart” button appearing at the bottom-right space.
  4. Then, tap on the Quick Settings panel.
  5. On opening it up, a new “Dark theme” tile will appear on your screen.
  6. You need to click on it to enable the system-wide dark mode on your Chromebook.
  7. In case you want to revert to the light mode, you can disable the “Dark theme” tile appearing under the panel for Quick Settings.

Our Views On the Dark Mode

Chrome OS already offers a bit of dark mode interface, and being dark-designed, the quick settings and the app drawer didn’t change much after enabling the dark mode. The implementation of the dark mode on Chrome OS is not yet fully and effectively functional, and it still messes up various things.

The text is retaining the dark color even in the dark mode, thereby making it tough to read while searching for the applications in the drawer. The Taskbar won’t automatically change its theme. You will have to open the app drawer for applying the new changes. The dark mode has not been applied to the Files app or the Settings page, on at least the Beta build as of now.

The implementation related to significant improvement still needs to be done. Even though restarting helps very often, that can’t be relied on as a permanent solution.

So, these were the details related to the Dark Mode and how to enable it on Chromebook.
